Dictionairee definition

Human Oversight

Dictionairee Entry

Literal Meaning

An arrangement where a person reviews, approves, or can intervene in decisions a system produces, before or shortly after those decisions take effect.

Buzzword Usage

Offered as the closing reassurance in every automation proposal, always in the abstract, and never with the ratio attached of how many outputs one reviewer is expected to cover per hour.

Why It’s Fluff

  • Ratio Unstated: Oversight of ten decisions a day and oversight of ten thousand are described in identical words.
  • Liability Placement: The reviewer's real function is often to be the name attached when something goes wrong.
  • House-Cleaning Reality Check: Like glancing at the dishwasher as you walk past and calling the glance "human oversight of the kitchen."

Reality Check

Undercover Boss (2010s) where an executive spends part of one shift on the floor, and the visit is presented as meaningful supervision of an operation that runs thousands of hours without them.

The Operational Reality

The Marketing Label

β€œHuman oversight is embedded throughout our automated decision architecture.”

The Operational Reality

β€œA person reviews the output, and how many they can actually read per hour decides whether that means anything.”

Suggested Plain English

A person reviewing or able to stop what the system decides.

Example Buzzword Phrase

β€œAll automated determinations remain subject to human oversight at every stage.”

Example Plain English

β€œOne reviewer checks every rejected claim before it goes out, roughly forty a day.”
